Catalina 22 For Sale!
- 1986 Catalina 22
- Swing keel with kick-up rudder
- Pop-top with dodger for extra headroom and camping.
- Low-profile trailer with extendible tongue and brakes. (This is NOT Catalina’s
default trailer; it’s an aftermarket custom trailer built specifically for
the Catalina 22 and designed to make launching easy on shallow ramps.)
- The hull has NO blisters or hogging.
- All metal on the boat is wired for anti-corrosion in salt water.
Major Overhaul
I bought this boat in 2008 and immediately began refitting it. I removed EVERY
(and I do mean EVERY) single piece of hardware on the deck, bored out the holes,
filled them with West System Epoxy, then remounted each piece of hardware with
3M 4200 sealant and new stainless steel bolts. This means there are NO leaks and
zero chance of dry-rot in the deck even if the sealant fails years down the road.
I also replaced the bow eyebolt and installed a polycarbonate backing block to
replace the standard oak one. Similarly, I removed the original cockpit scuppers
and epoxied in new, polycarbonate ones. (All of this was done in September/October
2009, so this boat is watertight for the next 20 years.) I have hundreds of photos
of this process so you can inspect the work for yourself.
In short, this boat has been in the hands of someone who’s been sailing
all his life and working on boats nearly as long. You will not find a boat of
this vintage in better condition. It is 100% watertight from stem to stern.
Key Features:
- 2 brand new Lewmar 16 self-tailing winches for genoa sheets with included
winch covers
- brand new in-mast halyards.
- brand new stainless steel standing rigging, stays, shrouds, and turnbuckles.
The replacements are higher-grade stainless steel and stronger than the OEM equipment.
You can bet your life they won’t fail.
- brand new adjustable-tension split backstay -- makes trimming and raising/lowering
the mast very easy.
- 2007 Mercury 4 HP outboard with only 15 hours of running time. Starts in 2
pulls every single time. Drives the boat at 5.1 knots.
- brand new 5 gallon gas tank and fuel line.
- brand new 130 Genoa -- only flown twice.
- main sail in excellent condition. Contains 2 reef points.
- brand new swing keel lifting hardware -- pivot bearing, cable pipe, clamps,
cable, pin, and keel winch all replaced in October 2009.
- brand new running lights, deck/steaming light and anchor light installed October
2009.
- new deep-cycle battery installed October 2009.
- built-in automatic battery charger
- all cabin lights replaced with new LED versions found on modern Catalinas.
They last forever and burn very, very little power.
- brand new mainsheet traveller
- brand new Lewmar rope clutches mounted on cabin top for halyards. These are
new-style clutches -released in 2008 that allow pulling without releasing the
clutch and hold lines securely without chaffing the rope. (Four clutches in all)
- brand new teak handrails and accent stripes installed in October 2009.
- All teak has been meticulously treated with 7 coats of Interlux Goldspar Marine
Varnish. Interlux Goldspar is the absolute best varnish you can buy. There’s
nothing that will outlast or outshine it.
- Kick-up rudder with new tiller.
- Radio installed, but requires a new antenna (the previous owner had one mounted
to the rear stanchion, but I intended to relocate it to the head of the mast.)
Included Extras:
- fiberglass mast carrier kit for the bowsprit.
- Portapotty
- mast-raising system included (steel mast stepper sits in rudder pintles and
makes raising the mast incredibly easy.)
- small jib for very windy days, but it has a tear at the foot that will need
repair. (I’ve never used this sail.)
- Button-down cabintop canvas cover protects all hardware and teak from the
elements.
- Two anchors and anchor lines.
Known Issues
- Like any fiberglass boat, you should expect to see tiny spider cracks in
the gelcoat in corners. This is completely normal and harmless.
- There are a couple scratches and dings on the hull from the previous owner.
I have the gelcoat supplies to repair them, but just haven’t gotten around
to it. (Resealing the deck hardware was my first priority; I was going to repair
the scratches next.) None of these are structural in any way -- they are purely
cosmetic issues.
- The trailer’s brakes are fully functional, but the hitch needs to be
replaced in order to use them. (The boat tows fine without brakes as long as your
pulling vehicle is a midsize truck or larger.) The trailer could use a good painting
and new bunk carpeting. Again, this was on my list for the restoration; just didn’t
get to it yet.
- Keep in mind that this boat is 24 years old. It’s in phenomenal shape
for that age!
Reason for Selling
-
I’m moving to California later this year and can’t take it with
me. I want to make sure it ends up in the hands of someone who can take care of
it and will appreciate the hundreds of hours of work I’ve put into it. If
you’re an idiot, go ruin someone else’s boat.
More Information
-
If you’d like to see the boat in person, shoot me an email and I’ll
be happy to show it to you. Please note: it’s not currently on the water,
so test-sails are not possible.
Payment
-
I will accept only cash. I’m sure you’re a very honest person,
but I’ve been burned before. This point is absolutely non-negotiable. I
am not interested in trades. I am asking $7,900. I understand there are other
Catalina 22’s available for less. This one has all-new equipment and has
been meticulously refitted. The winches and rope clutches alone add up to $1,300
and the engine would run you about $900. Add in the new rigging, new foresail,
and the fact that you’re completely immune to dry-rot from now on, and you’ve
got a package well worth the extra money. Please do not expect me to lower the
price --- I’m not in a rush to sell, I want the boat to go to an owner who
will treat it right, and I know what it’s worth. This isn’t a junky,
throw-away Catalina 22.
